Blood Tests – Risks and Dangers

Taking blood samples is one of the simplest procedures which have a very low risk rate. There are hardly any dangers involved in the process. It is very rare for blood tests to result in serious complications but there are chances for slight complications to arise.

The blood tests can result in the following complications:
Infection: Control of infection is very important and the doctors and nurses who take blood samples are required to follow strict regulations in relation to the storage and disposal of needles and blood samples. They are also required to properly label and store the blood sample so as to minimize the risk of misplacement and confusion. Infection may occur at times where the needle passes through the vein. In this case the wound may become red and swollen. If such is the case, then an appointment with the GP is recommended.

Excessive Bleeding: Bleeding at the site of the test is fairly common but it should not be excessive and should stop quickly after a cotton wool or gauze patch has been applied over it. In case there is non-stop bleeding, then the doctor or the nurse will take necessary action to stop the blood flow.

Bruising: Mild bruising around the area where the needle pierces the vein is fairly common but in come cases severe bruising may develop. This occurs due to the lack of pressure being applied to the site of the test after the needle has been removed.

Hematoma: This is a collection of blood beneath the skin and is formed due by the blood clotting to forma solid lump. It is a common feature after the test but if the pain continues then an appointment with the GP is recommended.

Dizziness: This is common in people who are afraid of needles and who cannot look at blood. If this is the case then, it is advisable to inform the doctor beforehand.
