Importance of Platelet Tests

Platelet count is done to measure the number of platelets in the body. The main function of the platelets is to help in the clotting of blood. They are smaller than the red and white blood cells. A platelet count is also a part of the complete blood count which can be done at an annual physical examination.

But it is intentionally done when a patient has unexplained bruises or takes an unnecessarily long time to stop bleeding from a small cut or wound. This test can also help determine whether the problem is genetic, any other disorder or even a side effect of medicine.
The normal platelet count in an adult is about 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per micro liter (x 10–6/Liter) of blood. If this level falls below 20,000 per micro liter, spontaneous bleeding may occur and this is considered a life-threatening risk.

The platelet count blood test is also done in the same manner as the other blood tests. There is no preparation necessary for the test. But one should tell the doctor about any drugs or medicines taken prior to the test. Some of the medicines like aspirin, aspirin compounds, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, tricyclic anti-depressants and some other antibiotics can affect the test results. So it is better to inform the doctor beforehand about their use.
